How to Handle Holiday Stress
“Christmas, Christmas time is here but mostly Shopping, Shopping, SHOPPING!” Have you heard this song yet on the radio? Does this line flood your mind of all the things you need to do this holiday season? If so, you aren’t alone. The end of the year can be a little hectic. Don’t worry. We have some ways for you to handle the holiday season with less stress.
Breathe
When you first feel stress creeping in, stop right where you are and take a deep breath. Then, take another one. When we inhale oxygen, it floods our brain and helps us to think clearly. Taking a minute to slowly and deeply breathe also helps us to calm our sympathetic nervous system (our ‘fight or flight’ reflex) and it engages our parasympathetic nervous system (our ‘rest and digest’ reflex). Reminding yourself to do this multiple times a day can help keep your stress levels down while checking off your holiday to-do list. Trying setting an alarm on your phone to periodically remind you to stop and breathe throughout the day.
Go for a Walk Outside
Getting outside is one of the best things you can do for stress. Not only does the Vitamin D from sun rays help to promote healing, but just getting out of the house and away from things that are stressing you out helps to calm our body systems down. Walk the yard, walk down the street, take the dog for a walk, or find a simple nature trail to walk. Walking is a form of exercising and exercising or movement release endorphins inside the body, and endorphins make us happy.
